Privacy Policy
last updated 4 July 2026
HYPE Athens is a nightlife discovery app for Athens, currently in beta on TestFlight and heading to the App Store, alongside this website where you can join the waitlist or register a venue. This policy covers both. Our registered company details will be published here before the public launch; until then, everything privacy-related goes to info@hypeathens.com.
Who can use HYPE
HYPE is strictly 18+. We ask for your date of birth when you create an account with email and use it only to check that you are old enough to be here. If you are under 18, do not create an account; if we find one, we remove it.
Your account
When you sign up we store your email address, date of birth, display name, username (your @handle), avatar and the interests you pick. You can sign in with an email one-time code, an email and password, or your Google account; for Google sign-in we receive your Google email and basic profile so we can match it to your account. We store one identity record per sign-in method you use.
Location
Location is the heart of the app, so here is exactly what happens. With your permission, the app uses your precise location to show venues near you and to verify check-ins: you can only check in when you are physically at the venue (a geofence check), and a check-in stores your location at that moment. During a verified night the app sends periodic location heartbeats so your night can be confirmed. Raw location samples are deleted automatically after 45 days. Verified check-ins and reviews are kept because venue ratings depend on them: if you delete your account they are detached from your identity and remain only as records of a visit (venue, time and check-in location) under a deleted-user placeholder. You can revoke location access in your device settings at any time; nearby sorting and check-ins stop working without it.
Your content
Photos, reviews, posts and, for venue accounts, stories are stored on Cloudflare R2 and served through its CDN. Content you publish is public inside the app: anyone using HYPE can see it. Reviews are tied to verified check-ins.
Friends & social features
HYPE is social. Friends, follows, plans and outings, likes and saves are stored so those features work. Some of your activity is visible to your friends by design: for example, friends may see that you liked a venue or post, or that you are out tonight. Blocking someone cuts this off in both directions.
Reporting & moderation
You can report content or accounts and block people directly in the app. Reports go to our moderation queue and we aim to review them within 24 hours. We can remove content and suspend or ban accounts that break the rules; the details live in our Terms.
Push notifications
Optional. If you enable them, we store a push token for your device so Apple and Google can deliver messages. You can tune notifications per category, mute individual friends, or turn them off entirely in the app or in system settings. Notification records are deleted after 45 days.
Analytics
We count things internally, for example how many people viewed a venue, so venues can see how their profile performs. The HYPE app itself has no third-party analytics SDKs, no ad networks and no tracking pixels. This website uses Google Analytics to understand visitor numbers, but it only loads after you accept analytics cookies in the banner, with IP anonymisation enabled; if you decline, nothing loads. We do not sell personal data.
Emails
We send transactional email only: sign-in codes, account notices and venue-related messages, delivered via Resend. If you are on the waitlist we will email you about the launch; to be removed from the waitlist at any time, email us at info@hypeathens.com and we will delete your entry.
The website: waitlist & venue registration
Waitlist: your name and email, collected with explicit opt-in consent (Law 3471/2006), never pre-ticked; we record the consent version you accepted. Venue registration: business and owner name, business type, number of stores, contact email and phone numbers, optional address, and your WhatsApp-contact preference. Venue leads are handled on a legitimate-interest basis so we can respond to your enquiry; WhatsApp updates require a separate opt-in.
Cookies
Essential by default: this site sets a cookie to remember your language and a localStorage flag to remember your consent choice, and loads no analytics until you accept. If you accept, Google Analytics sets its own cookies to count visits; decline and it never loads. There are no advertising or marketing cookies.
Processors & infrastructure
We use a small set of processors under data-processing agreements: Cloudflare (media storage and CDN), Resend (email delivery), Expo together with the Apple and Google push services (notifications), Mapbox (maps in the app) and Hetzner (hosting, on servers in Germany, in the EU). None of them may use your data for their own purposes.
How long we keep things
- Account data: for as long as your account exists.
- Raw location samples: 45 days, then deleted automatically.
- Notification records: 45 days.
- Verified check-ins and reviews: kept, de-identified if you delete your account.
- Waitlist data: until launch or until you unsubscribe.
Your rights
You can delete your account in the app (Settings). Deletion is immediate and erases your profile, your media from storage, your raw location samples, your devices and your notification history; verified check-ins and reviews are detached from your identity and kept under a deleted-user placeholder so venue aggregates stay honest. You can also export the data we hold about you in a machine-readable format. Under the GDPR you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, portability and objection: write to info@hypeathens.com and we will act on it. You can complain to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority at any time. Greek law applies, including Law 3471/2006 for the waitlist consent.
Changes & contact
We will update this policy as the product evolves and change the date at the top when we do. Questions: info@hypeathens.com.
